anta Barbara and Montecito have been blessed with numerous
benefactors. This philanthropic tradition began quite early
as captains of industry, banking, and business from the East
began flocking to the American Riviera for winter quarters.
Eventually, some of them made Santa Barbara their permanent
home and involved themselves in civic projects. Frederick Forrest Peabody,
who made his fortune with Arrow shirts, ranks high on the list of civic patrons
who adopted Santa Barbara and left an indelible mark.
