Reiner has made a living in the
fashion and celebrity magazine
world for nearly 20 years. His
large and varied portfolio includes
portraits of Martin Sheen, Kelly
LeBrock, Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Billy Zane, Marcia
Gay Harden, Alek Wek, Milla Jovovich, and many others. His images
have appeared in various magazines in both the U.S. and Europe such as
W, Vogue, In Style, Cosmopolitan, and a long list of other periodicals.
Reiner wasn’t always going to be a career photographer. He
graduated from UCSB in 1991, with a Masters Degree in Electrical and
Computer Engineering; he then worked as an engineer for a few years
before deciding he probably didn’t want to do only that for the rest of his
life. He decided instead to take his hobby – photography – and turn it into
a full-time profession.
In the mid-‘90s, Reiner began making the rounds in Los Angeles,
and as luck would have it, was introduced to Lisa Rinna, a young model
and aspiring actress whose management company also represented Tori
Spelling. They admired TC’s photos of Lisa, so he shot pictures of Tori, and
soon things were off and running.
His photos for major companies such as Virgin Records, Mecca
Footwear, XOXO, Skechers, Seagram’s, City of Beverly Hills, Katharine
Kidd, Banana Republic, DuPont, Profoto, HaleBob, Miss Me, DeWitt
Watches and others, have rewarded TC with the ability to pursue his real
passion: portraiture.
“The best photographs,” he opines as we wind down our short
interview, “aren’t ones that my subjects give me; they’re ones that I take
from them.” In other words, he explains, he waits until they – models,
actors, tycoons, families – are finished giving him what they believe he
wants and then he can begin his real work. “I just have to catch them off
guard,” he says.
“When I say better photographs are taken and not given, I’m talking
about images with soul. When the subject is momentarily in the zone
(to use a sports analogy) you get a much more interesting photo than
when they are simply mugging the camera, no matter how talented or
photogenic they may be. This approach, however, requires some patience
while all the elements line up for that type of shot.”
