St. Gallen’s
Altstadt
, or Old Town, features
more than 100 examples of carved wooden
fensterbalkon
projecting from the fronts of
buildings. Dating from the 16th to the 18th
centuries, these oriel windows were status
symbols built by merchants to display their
wealth and are especially famous for their
imaginative supporting corbels. Usually painted
in sophisticated color combinations with themes
ranging from flowers, fruit, animals, stars, or
geometric designs, no two windows are alike.
