26 Profiles
If you don’t recognize the name Budd Carr, perhaps you know some of the movies to which the mu-
sic man has contributed: Platoon, JFK, and Natural Born Killers are among the scores of films wherein
Carr tunes have enhanced and complemented action directed by Oliver Stone (“We’re not afraid
of each other”). Steven Libowitz pulls up a chair with the Santa Barbara-based melody maker, whose
career took flight with the band Kansas and whose supervisory skills and wide-ranging compositions –
recently heard on the Showtime smash Californication – resonate beyond the Hollywood hills.
32 Up & Out
It’s not a bird, it’s not a plane, it’s a helium balloon – occupied by Google honcho Alan Eustace with
a high-flying hand from Santa Barbara scientist and Hope Ranch resident Julian Nott – almost 136,000
feet above. The creation isn’t just another flexible, non-porous bag, but one that World View entre-
preneurs intend to use for propelling civilians into space. Contributing editor Joe Donnelly corrals the
space-age innovator, from whose balloon Eustace set a world’s record for jumping 25-plus miles, and
picks Nott’s brain about what the future holds in the air up there.
50 Moguls & Mansions
The storied history of Cabrillo Boulevard, east of Stearns wharf, stretches wide and deep across
Santa Barbara’s shoreline, ranging from the seawall to oil derricks to a devastating storm in 1914,
expanding to additions of the Pavilion and Bathhouse and Hotel Mar Monte, in addition to other
amenities. Hattie Beresford digs in and describes in this comprehensive and enriching account how
– after decades of setbacks, conflicts among residents, and elbow-grease development – Cabrillo’s
thoroughfare found its footing.
68 Mate in America
Megan Waldrep sets the scene at the cozy Mate Gallery in Montecito, where curators Matt Albiani and
Ron Brand employ panache and imagination to display East Coast style among their eclectic items.
70 Travel
The pulse of France goes through the arteries of quaint villages with cottages on cobblestone streets
and amid the Canal de Bourgogne and Saone River, from which Journal founder James Buckley
– aboard the Aprés Tout – traverses and explores the “gastronomic and oenological center of the
universe” with wife Helen and newfound friends, as part of a six-day
expedition uncovering the likes of a truffle orchard, Hotel-Dieu des
Hospices Civils de Beaune (deemed “a palace for the poor”), Clos de
Vougeot and other Gallic wonders.
86 Scents and Sensibility
Hudson Grace owners Monelle Totah and Gary McNatton
make scents with a burning desire, in the form of creative
candles, on Coast Village Road.
