t a time when Santa Barbara City Parks and Recreation stands poised to initiate a multi-million-dollar restoration and renovation

of the Cabrillo Pavilion and Bathhouse, it behooves us to remember how our beautiful beachside parkland came about. Thanks to

various city commissions and scores of philanthropic citizens in the 1920s, Santa Barbara’s oceanfront became a public playground enjoyed

              by locals and visitors alike.

The development of the area west of Stearns wharf began near the turn of the 20th century with the construction of Plaza del Mar

and the Potter Hotel. The development of the area east of the wharf began in 1905 with the construction of

              East Boulevard.
