The various TV monitors at Cypress Inn – ordinarily the domain
of sports events in nearly every bar in the U.S. – play wall-to-wall
vintage Doris Day movies and they are a delight to watch. The
innocence of the films, however, can only mean one of two things:
either it was a very simple-minded era and we really were that naive, or
somebody was hiding something from us, big time.
Beside the front desk is a collection of World War I and World
War II toy airplanes and soldiers. On one wall is a Mae West quote:
“You should get out of those wet clothes and into a dry martini,” from
the movie
Every Day Is A Holiday
.
There is much to look at, admire, and marvel at, including a
poignant painting of one of Doris’s favorite dogs, Patrick Edward, and
the many gold and platinum records and albums framed along the
walls, particularly in Terry’s Lounge.
Doris’s Son
T
erry Melcher was Doris Day’s son who passed away 11 years ago
at the age of 60, but who obviously remains alive in her memory.
The hotel’s bar was named after him, as is the restaurant. Terry was an
award-winning music producer whose efforts included songs for The
Beach Boys, The Byrds (“Mr. Tambourine Man”), and Ry Cooder.
The walls in the bar tell his story: Gold and Platinum Records and
other awards for hits such as “Kokomo,”
Good Vibrations: 30 Years of
The Beach Boys
;
The Byrds’ Greatest Hits
, “Hey, Little Cobra” featuring
Terry and Montecito resident Bruce Johnston on vocals. There is even
a Silver Sails award given to Doris Day for a 2011 recording of the
Sony Music album
My Heart
, which sold 60,000 copies. There are 42
different album covers throughout.
