I
n 1995, when actor Dennis Franz and his wife, Joanie,
purchased the rambling 100-year-old Nantucket-style home
on two acres in Montecito’s hedgerow district, he was well on
his way to becoming America’s number-one cop: Detective
Andy Sipowicz, NYPD Blue’s grumpy, morally conflicted

The following article is the result of interviews that took
place at three different locations: Tre Lune on Coast
Village Road, in a car on the way to Ojai, and in a
private home on Middle Road.
Drafted into the U.S. Army immediately upon graduation
from Southern Illinois University, Dennis Franz spent nearly
two years in Viet Nam (1969-70). This photo was taken
in a military base camp outside Hue, where the then
24-year-old infantryman served as an observer with a
reconnaissance unit in the 82nd Airborne; his job was to
call in larger units to initiate combat based upon observed
enemy movement.
