“To me black is the most distinguished
and smartest of colors for clothes,
especially for evening wear,” wrote
Ganna Walska. “For the past few
years I had felt perfectly dressed in
the evening only when wearing black
which harmonized with the beauty of
my pearls to form the quintessence of
art and simplicity.” This black velvet
dress known as the “Venus” gown was
designed by the Paris couture house
of Callot Soeurs. Madame Walska
wore it to her wedding dinner when
she married third husband Alexander
Cochran in 1920.
